MEANINGLESS MAGAZINE is a comedy/philosophy website with writing on it.

What does "life is meaningless" mean?

I am writing this because I am tired of people debating me about this. Ever since I discovered the secrets of the universe (that’s a long story for another time), I have lived my life by one major principle: life is meaningless. That’s one of the main reasons this website has the title it does. The mantra “life is meaningless” is a fundamental core to who I am.

Every time I post something like this, be it on Twitter, or YouTube, or even here on this website….I get some crazy person e-mailing and attempting to argue with me or “correct” my belief or something. It’s either a religious person (who is, of course, 100% wrong). Or it’s someone suffering from some form of cognitive dissonance and living a not great life themselves, smelling their own noxious farts in their room somewhere, and taking things out on me that day.

First of all: stop. You’re not going to change my mind. Life is meaningless. I’ve heard all the arguments before. I’m right, and you’re wrong. Second of all: when I say that mantra, the people that don’t understand me are completely missing the point. It’s one of those things you either understand or don’t. An, “if you know, you know” type of thing.

The people that disagree are all stupid to me because whenever I encounter one of them they are all coming from the same place of anger and misunderstanding. What they all fail to realize is that the refrain “life is meaningless” isn’t me complaining. It’s neither good or bad, just objective fact: when we die absolutely nothing happens, we rot in the ground, and it’s all black just like it was before we were born. Don’t get upset at me for saying that: that’s just how the game is. The world is rigged. Your time on earth largely depends on how you react to that fact, but you should understand the universe is indifferent to how you react either way.

Once again, I must repeat: that mantra is not me complaining. On the contrary, it’s actually quite an uplifting thing. The idea that life has no meaning is a very freeing, thrilling thing if you’re lucky enough to grasp it. It does not mean you should abandon all your moral principles, kill yourself, or that you should sit in a chair all day eating Doritos and watching Netflix.

To me, what the phrase means is that you should grab hold of life with everything you’ve got and make the most of what you can do with what is in your control. Life is indifferent to whether or not you are depressed: a ticking clock doesn’t understand our dumb emotions, it just keeps going. So rather than sit around in misery, you should be aware at all times that you could die at any second.

A hot girl I had a thing with once told me something I’ll never forget. I’ve always found hot girls to be funny because they aren’t smart, but they aren’t necessarily dumb either, and due to how their lives are set up they have a particularly unique perspective and an amusing way of putting things sometimes. I was 20 at the time and voicing concerns about being nervous in life, and she told me, “Well, you could be walking around downtown Toronto at any moment, a thing could fall from a building and fall on your head and you’d die. No point being nervous about stupid stuff.” It’s simple, but it’s true: your skull would be crushed and you’d die instantly. That’s what I mean by life is meaningless. Nothing is promised on earth, everything is haphazard and chaos. Life is whimsical, and none of this shit makes sense. There is no order.

Even people considered public intellectuals in 2020 like Jordan Peterson have discussed this topic, and guys like him get it wrong in my opinion as well. In this video, he mentions it. And he falls into the same trap other people have when trying to argue with me. They offer me the sentiment, “Life isn’t meaningless, you have to create your own meaning! There are multiple meanings to be found within this life!!”

That’s precisely my point. The fact that you have to create your own fake meaning is, to me, proof that it’s all meaningless illusion. Now, don’t get me wrong here: that isn’t to say it isn’t worth creating your own meaning. You shouldn’t just sit down in a corner all day being pathetic and eating pudding. In my opinion, people like Woody Allen get it right. One should not give up on finding their own meaning in life, but they should also never forget that it’s all meaningless. To me, that’s a major fuel source in moving forward in life: the remembrance at all times that it’s all for naught, so you might as well carve something out of your existence anyway.

No matter how productive or how good of a person you are, at the end of the day it just amounts to mere distraction. You could be a builder of orphanages, or the founder of some great charity. It still doesn’t matter: at the end you die, you’re swallowed by the earth, and you’re eventually forgotten by your contemporaries who die also. There is no one discernible meaning to be found in this life, we’re all lost souls running around doing what we think is the answer. And personally I think there’s a beauty in that: all of this is basically for nothing, so we might as well make the most of it because you can’t get a refund on this shit.
